Hey gang!

We just announced our new art challenge for the #kidlitart community for 2019! It kicks off March 1st and runs until May 31st. The #KLACC19 is chance for everyone to play with that beloved form: comics!

Here are the guidelines (not rules! This is supposed to be fun. You can't mess this up!)

1) You create a new piece weekly. To make this process easy on yourself mentally, I recommend choosing a day, like Friday, to have your piece completed by (and post) so you have a week between pieces.

2) If you decide to share your new piece on social media, please tag it with #KLACC19 and #kidlitart so the community can see your progress and cheer you on!

3) The pieces created will have comics elements like dialogue bubbles, panels, and if you go full page, gutters.

4) We will have a few chats a month that focus on Comics101 information and resources. February 7th topic is: So You Want To Make A Comic. 😉

5) The goal here is to create something fun and play! Your weekly pieces can be single panel, a traditional three-panel strip, a full page with multiple panels, it's up to you!

6) The weekly pieces can all be independent of each other, or connected as part of a larger project. Again, up to you!

7) You may consider using your #kidlitart28 prompt response as a focus for your comics. Take those characters and situations and carry them over. Put them into situations and see what happens!

8) If straight comics aren't your thing, take the techniques we're going to be discussing and apply them to creating more picture book centric pieces. Up to you how you respond to the prompt.

9) We will have a Show&Tell chat so we can all share what we made throughout the challenge.

10) Remember, your pieces aren't expected to be perfect. This is a chance to explore and have fun!The whole point is to tell stories. Play with your characters and enjoy the process.

Hey everyone!

(I'm just posting a repeat of what was announced at our January 24th #kidlitart chat.)

Every year, we challenge our community to participate in a daily art challenge for the month of February. We call it #kidlitart28 (#KLA28) #kidlitart

This year we’re keeping it loose and easy for you. You draw as much or as little as you want on a daily basis-ink only, pencil only, full color finish-it’s up to you. The only parameter that you follow is the theme: WHAT YOU LOVE. You will be illustrating 28 days of things YOU love.

Your homework for the next week is to create a list of everything you love, narrow it down to a theme, and have that as your #kidlitart28 focus.

Also remember, whenever/wherever you post your images, to Twitter, FB,, Instgram, tag it with #kidlitart of course, but also tag it with #kidlitart28 (and if you choose #KLA28) so we can all see what you’re cooking up!

We have a three month art challenge coming, and what you do for #kidlitart28 could tie into it. We'll announce it at our next chat on January 31st!

STAY TUNED!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.850000381469727px;">One of the most important factors in an illustrator getting assignments is their portfolio, so last year we went back to basics for our annual art challenge. We launched the Build A Portfolio Challenge, or #BAPC.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;">This year we're kicking things up a notch (because as Blythe has said, we love you guys and want you to grow) so #BAPC's theme for 2018 is: Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone. Here is how it will work:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.850000381469727px;">1. During the last #kidlitart chat of each month a #BAPC18 portfolio prompt will be announced. These prompts are to be completed during the month following the announcement. You can take as long as you like to complete them. The goal is to have new pieces to add to your portfolio when the challenge concludes this summer.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.850000381469727px;">2. The chats where the prompts are announced will focus on the theme of the prompt shared. Obviously everyone and anyone will still be able to participate in the chat. It will be children's illustration centered.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.850000381469727px;">3 We will have three scheduled Show & Tells for participants to share their #BAPC18 pieces for critique, or just to get a pat on the back for finishing. If participants would like additional critique this can take place in the #kidlitart Challenge FB group and will be self-directed.

When you post your work on Twitter and especially Instagram, be sure to tag it with #BAPC18 so the #kidlitart community sees it! It wouldn't hurt to tag it with #kidlitart, either.

After every #BAPC18 prompt is announced in the #kidlitart chat, it will be added to the list below so that folks who miss the chat can keep up.
We're so happy you're jumping into February's Twenty-Eight Day Challenge with us.

The topic for the chat on January 26th was all about finding your voice as an illustrator. Our idea is to give y'all a chance to springboard yourselves further into finding the answer to that question.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Draw something every day for the month of February. (Or really, as often as you can.) The medium is up to you: traditional, digital, combined mediums-whatever works.

2. Each day should feature a theme, creature, idea, character, etc. that you LOVE. You are illustrating things that you are ALL ABOUT. Not just as an artist. As a person. What tickles your fancy? What do you geek out about? What stories would you tell if you just had the chance?

b. You can choose to focus on ONE theme the entire month, or do a different theme every day.

3. The finish of each illustration is up to you. It can be a simple pencil or pen sketch, or you can take it all the way to full color.

b. You can challenge yourself by setting a time limit. Say, 28 minutes?

4. Post every day (or as often as you can) to tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, etc., but especially Twitter (so #kidlitart-ers can see) your love of the day. And tag it with #kidlitart28

5. No, you do not have to be an official member of #kidlitart to participate. Everyone is welcome.

Our hope is that at the end of this challenge you will be able to look back at these sketches and see the stories, themes, and characters that appeal to you the most. With a bank of beloved topics, who wouldn't be inspired to then create a new picture book, comic, or novel? Wouldn't you want to take at least one of those illustrations further and see where they take you?

We hope so.

So start brainstorming about what you'd be happy to draw for twenty-eight days straight. .

After years of doing the Picture Book Dummy Challenge, we here at #kidlitart wanted to mix things up. One of the most important factors in an illustrator getting assignments is their portfolio, so we're going back to basics. This year we are going to be kicking off the Build A Portfolio Challenge, or #BAPC. Here is the rundown:

1. During the last #kidlitart chat of each month a #BAPC portfolio prompt will be announced. For those seeking a real challenge, a secondary prompt will also be offered for each month. These prompts are to be completed during the month following the announcement. The goal is to have new pieces to add to your portfolio when the challenge concludes this summer. Whether that number is six or twelve, it is up to you.

2. The chats where the prompts are announced will focus on the theme of the prompt shared. Obviously everyone and anyone will still be able to participate in the chat. It will be children's illustration centered.

3 We will have three scheduled Show & Tells for participants to share their #BAPC pieces for critique, or just to get a pat on the back for finishing. If participants would like additional critique this can take place in the #kidlitart Challenge FB group and will be self-directed.

4. When you post your work on Twitter and especially Instagram, be sure to tag it with #BAPC so the #kidlitart community sees it! It wouldn't hurt to tag it with #kidlitart, either.

5. After every #BAPC prompt is announced in the #kidlitart chat, it will be added to the list below so that folks who miss the chat can keep up.

#BAPC Prompts:(2017)
Prompts have been removed in anticipation of #BAPC launching for 2018
We will schedule a progress chat to correspond with each of the nine steps, but the remainder of the chats will cover the entire range of topics of interest to picture book illustrators and friends of the genre.

Are there any rules for the challenge?
No rules at all for participating, except to register your participation on the blog by January 31st. The idea is to have a great time while accomplishing something useful. If you’ve ever taken part in a similar challenge, you know the value of community: checking in regularly, encouraging others, allowing yourself to be held accountable to a schedule—all this will help you get the most from the experience.

Part II: Brass Tacks
What is a picture book dummy, anyway?
A picture book dummy is a facsimile of a printed book: text and images laid out on paper cut into pages which are then gathered and “bound” to approximate an actual book. A dummy can be extremely simple or very elaborately produced—but the defining characteristic is the page turn.

A physical dummy allows you to simulate the experience of reading a book. For the author/illustrator, a dummy aids in establishing and editing the visual context into a series of isolated page spreads viewed the way a reader will experience them. It can also be an important tool for exposing flaws in the pace of a manuscript or help to establish natural dramatic breaks in the story line.

Who should create a picture book dummy, and why?
There are three reasons to create a picture book dummy:

a) As mentioned above, a dummy is an important tool for structuring a picture book, and is a recommended exercise for polishing any manuscript. A writer who is not an illustrator can benefit from creating a simple dummy, but should NOT include it as part of the submission.

b) An illustrator who is not an author might consider creating a picture book dummy of a fairy tale or some other familiar text in the public domain, as a portfolio piece. A successful dummy will demonstrate that the illustrator understands how to structure a story within the constraints of the standard picture book format.

c) An author/illustrator should consider including a picture book dummy as part of the submission package for any original manuscript he or she wishes to illustrate. This will give the editor, art director or agent reviewing your submission the clearest idea of the viability of the project. For the purposes of this challenge, we will assume that this is the goal. If you are producing a dummy for any other reason, you may find that some of the challenge steps don’t apply to your project—but we hope they will be enlightening, nevertheless.

HOW WE BREAK THIS DOWN
Each step in the challenge will be introduced by a post here on the kidlitart blog. You are invited to check in via the comments section or the Facebook group at any time to share your progress or ask questions and there will be a “How’s it going?” chat scheduled at the close of each step in the process, to keep us on course.

I'll put some motivating and inspiring words here later for y'all, but this is the post where you need to comment with your first and last name to let us know that you'll be participating in the 2016 Picture Book Dummy Challenge. You plan to complete the mission and all that. ;)

When we were talking about the return of the Picture Book Dummy Challenge, we were hopeful that because of the #writedummy challenge, and our growing community that participants, would have at the very least a solid idea that they would want to pursue and turn into a picture book dummy.

Now is the time for everyone to take a good look at that idea notebook you have stashed away and follow through on one of those ideas. We're going to make a picture book.

If you are at a loss as to what to do: You didn't write a story for #writedummy, you have no idea notebook to pull from, you didn't even find out about #kidlitart or any of this until TODAY as a matter of fact- don't worry. You have plenty of time to figure out what you're going to do. In fact, why don't you head to Tara Lazar's blog and read up on all of the archives she has for her PiBoIdMo (picture book idea month)?

If you find yourself stuck because you have so any ideas you're not sure where to turn, ask yourself this: which idea is one that only YOU can bring to life? Which idea makes you feel a little dizzy with the excitement of turning it into a book? Which idea makes you sick just thinking about it never being seen by anyone else or being shown in the light of day? Which idea are your fingers positively itching to wrap a pencil around? THAT'S the idea for you.

That idea is one you are passionate about. And you're going to need passion. Creating a book is a long, sometimes slow, process. You're going to need passion to drive you and push you and help you endure the wait.

Enough talking, it's time for some action. We have quite a journey ahead of us.

Ready?

Set.

.....GO!
Howdy #kidlitart-ers! I hope everyone is having a lovely summer. Here at #Kidlitart we're about to hit the end of our calendar of topics, so it's time to hear what you'd like to talk about on our weekly chats. I think we've established a few favorites, so we will definitely be revisiting : Postcard Boost, Show N Tell, and Art Crushes.
Howdy, #kidlitart-ers!

We're so happy you're jumping into February's Twenty-Eight Day Challenge with us.

The topic for the chat on January 22nd was all about finding your voice as an illustrator.

4. Post every day (or as often as you can) to tumblr, Facebook, etc., but especially Twitter (so #kidlitart-ers can see) your love of the day.

Challenge kicks off on February 1st.

While we know our chats seem effortless and often fly by the seat of our pants, we do put some thought and planning into them. We try to meet your needs as professionals in the publishing industry.

With that in mind, here is another call for topics. Brainstorm and consider all you wish to discuss, learn about, figure out, and just plain understand. No topic is too silly or taboo-as long as it's related to illustration and/or the children's publishing industry.

We still have a pretty great line up of topics through the end of the year, so anything posted here will most likely put into rotation starting in January.

You guys helped create a pretty great little community, and we'd like to keep that going, so be sure to leave your thoughts down in the comments section.
Last week we discussed Critique Groups on our weekly chat, and it was a lively discussion (as most of them are.) You can read the transcript here

We thought it'd be helpful to our #kidlitart community if we listed folks interested in getting together with other illustrators to form a critique group, whether face to face or online, the parameters are up to you, dear chatters.

Remember, to make the most of your group, set a regular deadline: weekly, bi-monthly, etc. at a regular time. Decide on the number you want to cap your group participation at, and state what you hope to get from the group up front so you guys are all on the same page. Deicide what form works best: Skype, Google+ Hangouts, email, private blog, etc.

And don't forget, when performing your critiques, use the 'Sandwich': Start with a positive assessment, move on to something that needs improvement (suggest a possible technique or approach to help with this if possible), and close with a positive comment. Remember, you're not supposed to tear each other down, but you're not supposed to blow smoke up each other's bums, either!

This week on the #kidlitart chat we have a special guest chatter: Greg Pizzoli! He's no stranger to the chats, as he pops in regularly. He's one of us, and we're thrilled to have him chat with everyone this week about illustrating picture books.

Here's a little background:

Greg Pizzoli is an author, illustrator and screen printer from Philadelphia.

His first picture book, The Watermelon Seed, was published by Disney*Hyperion Books and was the 2014 recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Greg's latest picture book, Number One Sam, received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly, School Library Journal, and Kirkus, while the New York Times said Pizzoli's "zingy ice-pop colors and dramatically varied page compositions take home the blue ribbon."

Tasty worry wrapped in a sweet little package.

After college, Greg spent two years as a full-time volunteer in
AmeriCORPS from 2005-2006. In 2009, he received his MFA from the
University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he now teaches
part-time.

He lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two cats.

I first met Greg through his work. I saw it in the Portfolio Showcase at SCBWI LA and knew there was something special there. Since then, I've become a huge fan thanks to THE WATERMELON SEED. (I actually yelped out loud when it was announced as the Geisel Award winner during the ALA award webcast. How often have you met the winners?!) You can see the really fun book trailer here.

You can also see Greg's work in fun
places like Tattly, where you can get temporary tattoos, and Badge Bomb,

Now Greg has a new book out this week called NUMBER ONE SAM. Everyone, meet Sam:

It takes me down memory lane to my favorite book: GO, DOG, GO. I can't wait to see what is in store for Sam.

We asked Greg a few questions about his latest book.

1. Is Sam's story derived from a personal experience? It was at first, actually. I mean, I was never a dog. But I think it's safe to say that I, like most people, have a competitive side, and I've needed to learn how to be gracious and do the right thing.

2. What is your favorite thing about Sam? I don't know - he is fun to draw. I think if he was a real dog or person or something, his scarf might annoy me.

3. Sam struggles with not winning in the trailer. Does he want to be the best at EVERYTHING? He definitely wants to be the best at racing. I'm not sure about other stuff. I think when you align your identity with your accomplishments, it can get tricky when those accomplishments are diminished in some way. It can really disrupt your idea of who you are. I think Sam's character is just figuring that out.

4. What is Sam's favorite thing to do besides winning at the racetrack? Reading! He is a real book hound.

5. If Sam were to recommend a book, what would it be? I think he is partial to the Peanuts anthologies that Fantagraphics put out.

And even better, Greg is doing a giveaway with NUMBER ONE SAM! Here are the guidelines to enter:

1. Have a Twitter account
2. Participate in the #kidlitart chat on Thursday at 9pm EST
3. Following the chat, we will do a random drawing of the participants. The lucky winner will receive a personalized drawing of Sam like the one below.
I think we've established a few favorites, so we will definitely be revisiting : Postcard Boost, Show N Tell, and Art Crushes as well as checking in for the #PBDummy Challenge.
Do you have specific topics on craft you'd like to discuss? Promotion? Research? Publishing? Agents? Anything and everything to do with being an illustrator in the children's publishing industry is up for grabs. Give us your ideas in the comments, and we'll see what we can do to meet your needs.
